No.5° LINOLEUM FASHION

2025 Material: linoleum
Assignment: Forbo x Thinking Hands
Tutors: Kiki van Eijk & Joost van Bleiswijk
Studio Thinking Hands, Design Academy Eindhoven
Material provided by Forbo Flooring Systems
This project emerged from my observation that linoleum shares qualities with leather. Inspired by traditional leather working techniques, I explored ways to give linoleum three-di-mensionality through various manipulation methods, including sewing. While some techniques presented challenges that required adaptation, the most successful experiments involved an interlocking system inspired by zippers - a method that proved both fluid and gentle on the material.

Initially working in two dimensions, I discovered that strategic cuts and curved patterns could create compelling three-dimensional forms. This led me to experiment with transforming the material into functional objects like bags, hats, and skirts. The resulting pieces challenge our expectations: while they maintain the appearance of functionality, their unconventional material choice creates an intriguing tension between practicality and artistic expression.
